An iPhone and A Tragedy

A young man got an iPhone with a credit to pay in rates; nothing unusual in Occident, where a new iPhone is a kind of personal status for many people. The device is expensive, but for many it doesn’t matter, including those who are a new graduate with a part time job and the phone cost more than 2 months of remuneration. But in this case, the tragedy took place in Maharashtra India, where 60% of the country’s population earns less than 50 USD a month, we are talking about, at least, 700 million citizens that are poor and for them, the purchase of an iPhone is not just impossible but even paying it in rates and for years will be a deliberate act of irresponsibility. This needed to be the concern of the father who told the son to give back the phone and be serious about their real economic priorities and possibilities. The son, out of anger, menaced to let himself fall down from a high cliff, that would be fatal. The father who sacrificed daily as a driver, tried to take his son out of the risk and held him, just accompanying the dramatic decision of his son and fell after him finding death. To end the tragedy and put an end to this family history, the mother who witnessed everything voluntarily through herself, as well.
This materialistic and irresponsible behavior of the son just took the lives of the only people who truly cared and supported him in life, but maybe for him it was better to have a new iPhone to show to friends and attract envy of others.
