Herodoto the Greek intellectual, explorer, and in our days, a road traveler, was a curious person who for the legal fact of the old Greek Democracy that not just their anti-democratic neighbours were barbarous, but any population far from their territories were barbarous. Herodoto wanted to see with his eyes, and write about these exotic places. His personal style of describing was a kind of detailed picture of the cities, monuments and folklore of the lands and the people he visited and made him the first Historian of our time.
Indro Montanelli, the Italian journalist, was a never ending traveller in search to fulfill a job in the most distant destinations in Europe, Africa and America, in times where people worked, lived and thought about their own country. Montanelli had a secret talent to read the facts and the character of the leaders and political figures of his time, and his writing was a strong commitment to put far away his personal sympathies or animosity towards the argument he wrote about. It was like a strong fight between a dedicated professional and an open Italian patriot that he wanted to help his country to change but said the facts as true of possible, creating a national professional culture of the truth farway of the immediate opportunism. He became, as Herodoto, a Historian; Requested by the public to speak or to talk about Mussolini, the Second World War, Hitler, the First Republic, De Gasperi, the Pope Pio XII, including the recent Tangentopoli and Di Pietro. His years of serious and dedicated journalism, made him not just have the right, but the public permission to speak about the past, the present and to be an Oracle for the future.
